Fall Family Photos | The Cannon Family
One of my favorite times of year to photograph families is fall. There is something about the warm colors, cooler weather, and cozy feeling of the season that makes for such beautiful family photos.
Last August, I had the opportunity to meet some new clients while participating in a few local markets. I hosted a giveaway during that time for a complimentary photo session, and this sweet family was the lucky winner!
They chose to do their family session on my family's property in September, and it ended up being such a beautiful afternoon. The natural setting, warm tones, and soft light made the perfect backdrop for their family photos.
Of course, if you've ever photographed a toddler, you know that little ones don't always get the memo that we're supposed to be taking pictures. Their sweet daughter had a few moments where she was simply being a toddler, and that's completely okay! Instead of trying to force her to sit still or smile for every photo, we got creative and found ways to make the session fun for her.
Those moments ended up being some of my favorites. Sometimes the best family photos aren't the perfectly posed ones. They're the genuine smiles, little interactions, and in-between moments that show your family exactly as they are.
I remember getting home from this session and realizing I had taken wayyyy more photos than I normally would for a 30 to 40-minute session. But when I started going through the gallery, I realized just how many sweet moments we had captured.
Even more special was hearing from Mom after she saw her gallery. She had been worried that the photos wouldn't turn out well because of her daughter's little tantrum during the session, but she ended up loving the images even more than she could have imagined.
That is one of the things I love most about being a photographer. You don't have to have a perfectly behaved toddler, a perfectly posed family, or a perfectly planned session to create photographs that you will treasure. My job is to work with whatever your family brings to the session and find the beautiful moments along the way.
What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
I also loved the outfits this family chose for their session. Their neutral color palette of warm brown, ivory, white, and denim complemented the natural surroundings without blending into the background.
If you're wondering what to wear for fall family photos, this is a great example of how you can coordinate without everyone wearing the exact same thing. Choosing a few complementary colors and incorporating different textures can make your photos feel cohesive while still allowing everyone's individual style to show through.
Some of my favorite colors for fall family photos include:
- Warm browns and tan
- Cream, ivory, and white
- Denim
- Olive or muted green
- Rust and terracotta
- Soft neutrals
I especially love these colors for outdoor sessions because they work beautifully with natural fall scenery and create a timeless look that won't feel dated years from now.
